Fred E. Derby III, 60, died peacefully in his home on Nov. 30, 2003. Born in Lansing, MI, he attended the Michigan State Music School, studying piano and music theory, and applied art at the American Academy of Arts in Chicago. Mr. Derby was a producer and director with Gross Telecasting in Lansing from 1962-1972, from 1972-1982 he was the Visual Communications Manager at Marshall Field & Co. In 1982, he established, owned and operated an events planning and catering business. Mr. Derby’s life’s passion was chanoyu, Japanese tea ceremony, which he studied for 12 years under the tutelage of Ikka Nakashima, Sensei. He was also a longstanding member of the Zen Buddhist Temple and studied under The Venerable Samu Sunim. He is survived by his sister, Susie; and brother, Kim, both of Florida. Memorial Services will be held at Zen Buddhist Temple on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003 at 10 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Zen Buddhist Temple, 1710 W.
