This is written in response to the article “7th-grade lesson on Ramadan stirs Christian demonstration” (News, Nov. 30).
It’s nearly 2004 and we haven’t made much progress, have we?
In these times, when compassion, understanding and tolerance are in such short supply, why would some parents in California seek to eliminate an extra-credit project on Ramadan?
Would these same parents object to an extra-credit project on the Romans or Christians?
Or the history of Halloween or Valentine’s Day?
My deepest sympathies go out to teacher Len Cesene, a man who dared to think outside the box (for 10 years and just now getting feedback?). So I say this:
Mr. Cesene, please send your resume to our school district.
We could really use a teacher like you.
