Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The elephant in the room Monday wears a No. 8 Bears jersey and throws the tightest spiral Halas Hall has seen in years.

Without Dick Jauron ever saying his name during his news conference, Rex Grossman became the obvious focus for a Bears team torn between playing for the future and salvaging a .500 record this season. Jauron sounded resigned to serving both masters.

“We have three games left and we’ll do everything we can to win those three games while we look at personnel possibly that we haven’t seen enough of to this point,” Jauron said.

In fact, everybody knew there was only one player to whom Jauron was referring. And it wasn’t tight end Gabe Reid.

On Sunday, several players spoke of the switch to Grossman as if it were a foregone conclusion. The consensus is that no matter how much buzz an unknown quarterback creates, the players will find out if Grossman can play the same time everybody else does: Sunday afternoon.
