Investigators were searching Thursday for a man who impersonated a police officer to gain access to a woman’s apartment in Woodstock, then robbed and assaulted her Wednesday afternoon.
The 30-year-old woman, who was beaten and cut with a knife, underwent surgery Wednesday evening at Memorial Medical Center in Woodstock. She was still in the hospital Thursday afternoon, but the hospital would not provide an update.
“Her injuries were not life-threatening,” said Woodstock Police Sgt. Richard Johns.
Police responded to the woman’s home at the Lakewood Apartments complex on Stonelake Road about 2:40 p.m. Wednesday, Johns said.
The woman told police that she heard a knock at her door and asked who it was. A man who identified himself as a police officer asked her to put her dogs away because they were barking.
The woman secured her dogs, opened the door and was attacked, police said. The man, who wore black jeans and a hat with the word “Police” on it, was last seen running away, police said. He took cash, but Johns would not say how much.
Johns cautioned residents to ask anyone coming to their door for photo identification. He also said residents can call the Police Department.
Anyone with information is asked to call Woodstock police at 815-338-2131 or McHenry County Crime Stoppers at 800-762-7867.
