Mr. Hustle got that name for a reason.
How can Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig even consider reinstating Pete Rose? He bet on baseball games! Mr. Rose is finally going to admit that he bet on games in his upcoming book.
Well Joe Jackson was exiled from baseball for his part in the 1919 Black Sox scandal. Mr. Jackson was a player of whom the great Babe Ruth, early in his career said, “I decided to pick out the greatest hitter to watch and study, and Jackson was good enough for me.”
Well, Joe Jackson is good enough for me too. Rose is running around the country selling his book. Joe Jackson and the other seven Chicago players were barred from baseball for life.
Joe Jackson played outlaw baseball on several southern teams under assumed names, then opened a liquor store in Greenville, S.C.. Ty Cobb once came in for a fifth of bourbon. Jackson did not seem to recognize his old rival. Cobb finally asked, “Don’t you know me, Joe?” “Sure, I know you, Ty,” Jackson answered. “I just didn’t think anyone I used to know up there wanted to recognize me again.”
If Major League Baseball decides to reinstate “Mr. Hustle,” it had better be consistent and reinstate Mr. Jackson.
From a man who loves the game and its rich history.
