Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The “Chicago in a sweet spot” editorial on Jan 2 was a nice positive start to the new year. You recognize the importance of a sound education system to the future of this city.

Despite the “upward direction of test scores” we are still not providing a first class education to as many as we could if we really got serious–really serious–about our commitment to good schools.

I do some tutoring in a Chicago school and see what is happening first hand. I am absolutely convinced that the first step in a serious effort to improve education is to change the way we finance schools. We have to change from the regressive real estate tax system to income tax to fund schools. I dearly wish the Tribune would put its strong voice behind this idea.
