Two Horizon League teams headed in opposite directions met Saturday at the Gentile Center. Upward-bound Wright State won its fourth game in a row, and Loyola went down to its fourth straight defeat.
“As a team we’re struggling,” said Paul McMillan, whose 28 points, a career high, 10 rebounds and two blocked shots couldn’t keep Loyola from falling 83-68. “We’re trying to figure out what we need to do to win a game.”
The Ramblers’ senior strongman sank 13 of 18 shots, but by the time he scored his first basket, with 11 minutes 12 seconds elapsed in the first half, Wright State (8-8, 5-1) already had permanent possession of the lead.
McMillan’s first basket reduced Loyola’s deficit to 20-15, and once he started scoring there was no stopping him. But though he scored 14 of the Ramblers’ last 16 points in the half, they trailed 37-29 at halftime.
During the first half Loyola (6-9, 2-4) gave up 13 points off turnovers and Wright State had eight offensive rebounds.
“They got eight offensive rebounds, and seven were rebounded for baskets,” Loyola coach Larry Farmer said. “Give a good offensive team enough chances–especially second chances–and it will score.”
Wright State first-year coach Paul Biancardi started three freshmen along with fifth-year seniors Vernard Hollins and Seth Doliboa, and freshman Zakee Boyd was his most effective sub.
Hollins penetrated to score the Raiders’ first two baskets, and he remained the hub of their offense throughout the game, finishing with 18 points and eight assists.
