This is in response to “NU fraternity faces investigation; Inquiry is called `broad in scope'” (Metro, Jan. 28). The time has come to evaluate the place of fraternities in American higher education. Once, in the days of all-male or sex-segregated universities, the fraternity was an important social institution, enabling students to form friendships and social connections. Now fraternities provide an outlet for men’s worst instincts and an institution from which women may be excluded.

It is unfortunate that over their decades and centuries of existence, fraternities have accumulated the wealth and land to maintain their existence and an influence far out of proportion to the small benefit they now bring to the college campus.
