This is in response to “Illinois primary is an exercise in futility” (Voice of the people, Jan. 26), by David Orr, Cook County clerk, pertaining to the Illinois primary election scheduled for March 16. I believe that he has put forth an excellent suggestion for future primary elections. I believe it is important, however, that the voters throughout Illinois do not ignore the upcoming primary election because the primary elections are often the vehicle by which school districts, park districts and other taxing bodies attempt to pass tax referendums.
Unfortunately it is common knowledge among representatives of the taxing bodies that the primary election is the best time to attempt to pass a referendum because of voters’ reluctance to declare a party affiliation or because of the lack of competition between candidates running for offices, thus resulting in smaller voter turnout often allowing for the passing of the tax increases.
Whether you support or oppose the pending referendums in your community, you should not become a disenfranchised voter. Remember that you do not have to declare a party to vote for the referendums–just ask for a non-partisan ballot. Even if you believe that the primary election is an exercise in futility, turn out to vote because every vote counts.
