It was a mess. Now, it’s a joke.
Dan Marino quit on the Miami Dolphins all of three weeks into a job team owner H. Wayne Huizenga designed especially for him, but, apparently, never really explained to him.
It was going to be “a feel thing”–the phrase used at Marino’s introduction as senior vice president of football operations — when it came down to figuring out front-office responsibilities of Miami’s great quarterback king.
Yeah, well, it didn’t take long for Marino to know he didn’t like the feel of “the feel thing.” Marino knew all along he wasn’t qualified for the position, which is why he talked about “a learning curve” when he accepted it.
Ultimately, though, what dawned on Marino was a) he wasn’t interested in learning how to become qualified and b) he was giving up a comfy life as a pro football retiree making big bucks working TV gigs around his golf game.
A reasonable guess is that Marino likely started wondering what in the world he was getting himself into when he found himself in Mobile, Ala., during Senior Bowl week looking at college quarterbacks dreaming of becoming … him.
Regardless of the particulars, though, the Dolphins stand as a league laughingstock.
“We won’t miss a beat,” Huizenga said. “Who knows. Maybe the next person will be 10 times better.”
He shouldn’t hope so, because 10 times zero still is zero.
