An exhibit at Northwestern University library highlights the ups and downs of how the ordinary elevator has influenced American culture–from elevator music to Roald Dahl’s book “Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator.”

Books, maps, photographs and an audio-visual display that traces the history and science of elevators from the early 1800s are part of “The Elevator and the City,” which opened in late January.

It includes clips from movies–“Metropolis,” “North by Northwest” and “Being John Malkovich,” to name a few–in which filmmakers used elevators as props.

“It was fun putting this exhibit together,” said Harriet Lightman, a bibliographer with Northwestern. “It’s snappy and snazzy. It’s a cool exhibit.”
