Central Suburban South meet

New Trier won with 1st-place finishes from Drew Woodbury (50-yard freestyle, 100 butterfly), Evan Mullin (100 freestyle), Jimmy Munson (100 breaststroke) and 3 relay wins. Evanston was 2nd–31 points behind Trevians–as Jacob Johnson won 2 events.

North Suburban meet

Brian Boger took first in 50 and 100 freestyle to lead Stevenson to team title. Teddy Kautz (200 freestyle), Tommy Gregory (100 butterfly), Kevin Alland (500 freestyle) and Brad Westrich (100 breaststroke) also won for Patriots, who topped Libertyville 325.5-252.

TEAM, SYNOPSIS

At Leyden

Ryan Nallen, Nick Prieto, John Serafini, Matt McAleer, Keith Lesniak and Peter Folan from Notre Dame advanced. Fenton, Niles West, Oak Park and Fenwick had 4 qualifiers each. Fenwick’s Mike Tamillow won 189-pound class and is 38-0. “My goal entering the season was to win every match,” Tamillow said. “I think I’m ready for state.”

At Morton

St. Rita’s Brendan McElligott (215 lbs.) avenged 3-2 regional loss to Jake Polich from Reavis, defeating Polich (37-1) 2-1. “I think it was a case of who wanted it more,” McElligott said. Albert White won by pin at 135 and is 41-0. “I thought that this was something I could do,” the St. Rita freshman said. “I’m not surprised because I trained very hard to get to this point.” Travis Hammons from Hubbard is 25-0, winning at 140. “I felt that no one expected me to come here and win because I’m from the Public League,” said Hammons, who joined Bogan’s Matt Ross as the only Public League winners.

At Naperville North

Naperville North’s Nick Fanthorpe (112), Glenbard North’s Joe Gomez (130), Bartlett’s Mark Lukaszewski (140), Neuqua Valley’s Matthew Collum (145), Naperville Central’s Jeff Burdorf (275) and Bolingbrook’s Kyle Jahn (125) and Kyle Williams (215) won to remain undefeated.

At Plano

Pat McCaffrey, Mike Benefiel, Conor Beebe, Brian Martin, Vince Colletti and Mike Mucha won for Montini, which was 6-0 in title matches and had 8 wrestlers qualify for state meet. Sandwich had 9 qualifiers, including Bobby White (275), who is 37-0. Wilmington’s Tony Vercelli won at 215 to stay undefeated (31-0).

At Rolling Meadows

Grant’s Jim Kennedy–last year’s state runner-up at 103–won by pin at 103. “I wanted to keep my elbows in,” Kennedy said. “I knew he wanted to shoot so I stretched him.” Kennedy is 38-0 and 1 of 6 Bulldogs to advance. Mike Poeta from Highland Park–a 3rd-place finisher at state his 1st 2 years and the state champ at 140 last year–won at 152 pounds. “Every single year I am confident that I will win Downstate,” Poeta said. “This year I am even more confident. I do not think there is anyone in the country that can beat me.”
