In a competitive job market, every edge counts. That’s why more people are looking to add something like a law degree to their resume.

“There are a lot of MBA degrees in the marketplace,” said Paul Kontonis, executive director of Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions graduate programs.

“Now, employers are looking for what else you have to offer. They’re looking for that JD.”

Of all the postgraduate test preparation offered by Kaplan, Kontonis said the LSAT has seen the largest increase in recent years. It used to be that many LSAT preparation students were recent college graduates heading to law school directly from undergraduate programs.

“What was happening before was people were competing on what [they] did in college,” Kontonis said. That included undergraduate GPAs, test scores and extracurricular activities.

“Now we got people who are doing work experience, getting out and working before they come back to school,” he said. “It’s really changing the profile. And that tends to happen when the economy is down.”

Because many test-takers are older, they can forget how grueling entrance exams can be. Kaplan offers on-site practice available in Chicago beginning Saturday. For more information, go online to www.kaptest.com/testdrive.
