Some ’90s styles are worth bringing back, while others are better left in the last millennium. Here’s RedEye’s take on whether today’s hipsters should use or lose these fads.
“The Rachel”
The ‘do that
Jennifer Aniston wore on “Friends.” Everyone had it–it was the ’90s equivalent of the Farrah look.
RedEye: Lose it. But you can still follow Aniston; her current flowy style with bangs is hot.
Adidas windpants
Light windpants that made noises every time you moved.
RedEye: Use it. Workout and yoga wear are street legal.
Backpack purses
Exactly what the name describes: a miniature backpack used as a purse.
RedEye: Lose it. Marc Jacobs has saved us all.
Piercings
Getting your tongue, belly button, eyebrow, nipple, etc. pierced.
RedEye: Use it, but go for the nipple shield.
Cargo pants
Have somewhat of a wide leg, with large pockets part way down the leg.
RedEye: Use it, as long as the pants are silky and the shoes are stilettos.
Flannel shirts
Grungy, flannel shirts from dad’s closet worn over concert T-shirts to complete the “grunge” ensemble.
RedEye: Lose it. Suits are back. Try the french cuff instead.
Platforms
Shoes with large, thick heels, similar to ’60s and ’70s looks.
RedEye: Lose it. Try a kitten heel or stiletto instead.
Caps with the tag still on it
For some reason, baseball caps with tags were hot in the early ’90s.
RedEye: Lose it. Try the trucker cap or a cowboy hat.
Everything fleece
Vests, jackets, pants, toques, socks …
RedEye: Use it on the slopes, lose it on the street. Go for the puffy instead.
