A precautionary order to boil water through Friday was issued for about 280 residents of unincorporated Dundee Township after a water-main broke.

The order was issued Thursday morning for the Lake Marian subdivision after a water pipe cracked, lowering the water pressure and creating the potential for bacteria to get into the subdivision’s water supply, said Randy Olson, an operator for Utilities Inc., the water company supplying the area. The pipe was repaired by 4 p.m.

Olsen said a water sample was sent to the McHenry County Health Department for testing. Test results usually take about 18 hours.

The company will decide Friday whether to extend the boil order another day.
