Erin Montgomery (left, top), a senior outfielder on Illinois’ softball team, jarred the USA Olympic team when she belted a two-run home run off Lisa Fernandez last week in Clearwater, Fla. Although the Illini lost the exhibition 3-2, it was the closest game for the U.S. National team in its pre-Athens tour. Fernandez, one of the world’s best pitchers, will play in her third Olympics in August. “That was pretty cool, pretty amazing,” said Montgomery, the Casey-Westfield High graduate who has a school-record 20 home runs. “I was down 0-2 in the count. I’ll remember it for the rest of my life.”
