Tribune theater critic Michael Phillips’ recent review of “The Phantom of the Opera” was that rare piece of criticism in which the review contains more wit and sheer artistic content than the actual piece being reviewed (“`Phantom’ somehow upstages itself,” Tempo, March 8). His insight that “`Phantom’ is a great show if you don’t have to listen to it” ranks right up there with Mark Twain’s assertion that Wagner’s music is “better than it sounds.”
