Three suspicious fires occurred within several hours late Sunday and early Monday, damaging three garages on Winnetka’s west side, officials said.

“The cause is undetermined at this time,” said Deputy Fire Chief Scott Smith, who said no one was injured.

The fire that did the most damage was reported shortly after 1 a.m. Monday in the 1000 block of Spruce Street, about 10 blocks from the other two fires, said Deputy Police Chief Eric Bennett.

A homeowner was awakened by an explosion and found his garage in flames, Bennett said. A car and a sport-utility vehicle were destroyed.

The first fire was reported at 10:40 p.m. Sunday after a homeowner was alerted by a fire alarm in his house in the 200 block of De Windt Road, Smith said.

As firefighters were putting out that fire around midnight, a security guard reported that a garage was on fire less than a block away in the 100 block of Thorn Tree Lane, he said.
