Rod Beck will be out indefinitely while he deals with personal problems and probably won’t be ready for opening day. The Padres reliever hasn’t been in camp for several days. GM Kevin Towers said he couldn’t discuss Beck’s problems other than to say it “possibly” was health-related.
Phil Nevin walked onto a Padres practice field and right into some ribbing from David Wells, who asked: “You got a pass to get on the field?” Nevin began rehabilitation after straining his left shoulder diving for a ball March 7, a year to the day he dove for a ball and dislocated the same shoulder. Friends all deliver Nevin the same message: Don’t dive.
Lenny Dykstra, moments after he slipped on a Mets uniform for the first time in 15 years, left the clubhouse for a quick smoke when a security guard approached him and told him to put out his cigarette. With that, Dykstra was welcomed back to the Mets as a spring training instructor, working with players on how to play the outfield, bunt and win. “Some people are winners and some people aren’t,” Dykstra said.
