Mary Schmich’s compelling March 19 column poignantly emphasized that multitudes of people shudder at the mere thought of consuming horsemeat (“Horses just don’t fit Americans’ idea of meat,” Metro). It was especially disconcerting to ponder that equines are inhumanely mistreated prior to being killed.
Horses, dogs and cats are longstanding companions of millions of United States’ residents. If the masses were exposed to the egregious inequities that cows, pigs, lambs and poultry endure in factory farms and slaughterhouses, however, it is certain that vegetarianism would flourish as a movement of compassion in action propelled by a reverence for life ideology.
