In a clear “I’m-not-afraid-of-typecasting” move, “The Sopranos” star Drea De Matteo will play another strong-willed Italian woman in her next role.
De Matteo, who plays Adriana La Cerva on the HBO mob drama, has been tapped to play Joey Tribbiani’s sister Gina on “Joey,” NBC’s “Friends” spinoff.
The sitcom showcases the siblings’ relationship as the aspiring actor Joey moves in with hairdresser Gina and her whiz-kid son in Los Angeles. Like her brother, Gina is said to be a magnet for the opposite sex.
While starring in “Joey,” De Matteo will continue to portray Adriana on “The Sopranos,” as she has contractual obligations to the show’s sixth and final season.
