William Shatner’s guest-starring turn on “The Practice” may turn into something more permanent.

The veteran actor and former “Star Trek” star is likely to join James Spader in the spinoff–or as ABC likes to call it, “evolution”–of “The Practice” next season, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Spader confirmed last week that he’ll star in the new show.

Shatner began a “Practice” guest stint earlier this month, playing Denny Crane, a high-powered partner at the law firm Alan Shore (Spader) hires in a wrongful-termination suit against Young, Frutt & Berluti. Shatner is set to appear on several more episodes through the end of the season.

Lake Bell (“Miss Match”) and English actress Fay Masterson (“Johnson County War”) also are set to join the spinoff, with Bell playing a law student and Masterson as an attorney; both work at Crane’s firm. Current “Practice” regular Rhona Mitra also is in talks for the new show.
