The government confirmed Tuesday that a Moroccan extremist group is the prime focus of the investigation into the bombings of four commuter trains on March 11.
Interior Minister Angel Acebes said at a news conference that the investigation into the bombings pointed to the Moroccan Islamic Combatant Group, which investigators have linked to the suicide attacks last year in Casablanca, Morocco.
The news conference was the first official update on the investigation since the Popular Party of Acebes and departing Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar was defeated in national elections three days after the attacks.
In a radio interview Tuesday, Aznar defended his administration’s performance and criticized the newly elected prime minister, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.
