An officer’s shooting of a South Side man wielding a replica revolver Saturday night was justified as an act of self-defense in the opinion of a panel investigating the incident, a police spokesman said Monday.
Humayun Sadiq, 48 of the 4900 block of South Loomis Boulevard, was shot once in the stomach and left arm outside a Back of the Yards sandwich shop.
Pat Camden, the police spokesman, said that two Deering District officers were untying two dogs they found tethered to a gas meter at Sabrina Subs, 1206 W. 51st St., when Sadiq approached and offered to help. He was very drunk, Camden said.
After helping load the dogs into the squad car, Sadiq pulled the fake gun on the officers. When he refused orders to drop it, he was shot, Camden said.
Sadiq was taken to Stroger Hospital, which refused to comment on his condition Monday. He was charged with two misdemeanor counts of aggravated assault on police.
