Carb-cutting dieters have more to worry about than hellaciously bad breath, as reported in “Skinny but stinky thanks to Atkins,” by Tribune staff reporter Julie Deardorff in the May 2 Q section.
Because of their unhealthy effects on the human body, low-carb diets have been linked to maladies ranging from constipation and bad mood to kidney problems and cardiac arrhythmias.
As a nutritionist, I would like to make the following suggestion:
Instead of blowing big bucks on low-carb breath mints, try a healthy weight-loss plan based on fruits, vegetables, grains and legumes.
A low-fat vegetarian diet can help you shed pounds and cut your risk of heart disease and cancer.
As a bonus, your loved ones will breathe a lot easier in your presence.
