– The first high-speed ferry on the Great Lakes is in service, making the trip from Milwaukee to Muskegon, Mich., in 2 1/2 hours at a speed of about 40 m.p.h. The twin-hulled Lake Express can carry up to 46 cars and as many as 250 passengers. It is scheduled to make three round trips a day.

– According to the National Marine Manufacturers Association, wholesale dollar sales of all boats were up 15.6 percent in January 2004 from a year earlier, but unit boat shipments were down 5.2 percent, based on the just-released January Monthly Shipment Report. The outboard, sterndrive and inboard powerboat segments were up 20 percent in dollars and 11 percent in units shipped.
