I read with interest your article about the Lake Zurich seniors protesting plans to hold their graduation ceremony in a Baptist church (“Graduation in church irks Lake Zurich teens,” Metro, June 3). I attended Lake Zurich High School in the early ’80s but moved to Georgia during my senior year. I was shocked to discover that my own public school graduation would be held in a Baptist church and surprised that I was the only student offended by the practice.
“This must be how it’s done in the Deep South,” I thought.
How interesting that 20 years later, my northern alma matter is also forcing students to walk across a Baptist church altar to receive their diplomas.
Kudos to the students for protesting this symbolic mixing of state and church.
