With regard to “Who put a 2nd `r’ into Father’s Day?” (Tempo, June 18), I have always wondered why it is that people find flatulence amusing. The offbeat article–albeit well-written–treated us to a series of Father’s Day card sentiments dealing with flatulence, and the fact that Benjamin Franklin authored a compilation of works titled “Fart Proudly.”
Of course children seem to think farting is absolutely uproarious, but once you grow up, it should all become rather sophomoric.
I recall the time in junior high school (now called middle school), when a young boy loudly passed gas in the gymnasium and many of his classmates–both girls and boys–literally convulsed on the floor in peals of laughter, tears streaming down their bright red faces. At the age of 13, I was just as perplexed by all of this as I am now, at 52.
Well perhaps I am missing some great cosmic joke, because I simply don’t find bodily functions funny, or greeting cards that–under the guise of a holiday sentiment–celebrate their occurrence.
