EVENT OF THE WEEK

Minority media execs discuss power

Oscar Joyner, president and chief operating officer of REACH Media Inc., and Guy Garcia, author of “The New Mainstream,” will be the Newsmaker Luncheon speakers for the annual conference of the National Association of Minority Media Executives. The conference, entitled “Decision Makers: Power and Responsibility,” takes place Wednesday through Friday at the Renaissance Chicago Hotel, 1 W. Wacker Drive.

Garcia will headline the luncheon at noon Thursday with remarks on how the new multicultural American mainstream will eat, work, play, learn and spend money in the 21st Century, and how organizations that don’t face up to the new reality will fail.

Oscar Joyner, son of syndicated radio host Tom Joyner, will speak at 12:15 p.m. Friday.

Joyner sits on several boards, including the Tom Joyner Foundation, which provides funding for students at Historical Black Colleges and Universities. Joyner is also responsible for creating and managing marketing synergies among the Tom Joyner brands, which include: The Tom Joyner Morning Show, The Tom Joyner Sky Show, BlackAmericaWeb .com and The Fantastic Voyage Cruise.
