The reader lamenting the death of manners in public behavior is right (“Missing manners,” Voice of the people, July 3). A walk through any busy Chicago neighborhood will guarantee an encounter with confident, stylish, vulgar-tongued people who don’t seem to think there is any problem with using the most vile language imaginable within earshot of everyone. I fear there is no longer any expectation of civility in our society and that obscenity has replaced vast swaths of actual English discourse.
