The recent National Endowment for the Arts survey on reading would classify me as a “non-reader” (“Americans–millions of them–are choosing not to read books,” Metro, July 9). I can’t remember the last time that I read a work of fiction.

I typically read only works of history, which accomplish the goals of reading that the endowment is worried about: critical thinking and evaluation of evidence.

My primary interest is World War I, especially war guilt.

I have read or reread at least four volumes on the subject in the last few months, as well as the revolutions following the war.

It seems to me that non-fiction accomplishes the goals of the endowment better than fiction.
