Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...
Even with their injuries, the Cubs have the best starting pitching in the National League. The team doesn’t need to score a lot of runs to win. The problem is they never seem to string together enough hits (or walks) in an inning to put more runs on the board–solo home runs don’t add much to the score or to a team’s momentum.
Last year the Cubs’ fortunes rose not with Sammy Sosa but with Kenny Lofton, who had a penchant for getting on base and making something happen. As the trading deadline approaches, I can only hope Jim Hendry is looking for another bona fide leadoff hitter, preferably a shortstop, who can help jump-start the sputtering offense.
