On Aug. 2 letter writer Tom Sherman answered letter writer Mary Richards, who was asking whether or not wearing seat belts was endangering anybody’s life except her own. Sherman pointed out that wearing a seat belt helps the driver maintain control in case of an accident or incident on the highway, thereby safeguarding other drivers as well as the people in the vehicle being driven.

I would like to add that I lost a patient and friend some 15 years ago in a horrific auto accident near Rockford. My patient, who was unbuckled in the back seat, moved forward and his head struck the head of the driver; my understanding is that the injury was fatal to both.

The point is that everyone in the car should be properly restrained with seat belts.
