White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said last week that he thinks Felix Diaz should remain in the major leagues for the remainder of the season.
He didn’t say that he thought Diaz should actually pitch in the major leagues though.
Whenever the subject of Diaz comes up, a worried look comes across Guillen’s face. Guillen said he’s not going to go to a four-man rotation until after this week’s series at U.S. Cellular Field against Boston, meaning the Sox will need a fifth starter Saturday.
Although Diaz is still with the club, Guillen said he won’t get the call against the Red Sox.
“Diaz against Boston is … I don’t think it’s a pretty good matchup,” Guillen said. “We might have to get somebody up from the minor leagues or see what we can do. I cannot tell you now, but I’m concerned about Diaz facing those guys.”
Guillen also said he was concerned with Diaz facing Cleveland and Minnesota. Guillen said left-hander Josh Stewart, 8-7 with a 3.80 ERA at Triple-A Charlotte, may be the next fifth-starter candidate.
STREAKY: After having a five-hit game Tuesday, White Sox second baseman Willie Harris went hitless in his next 14 at-bats before singling in the eighth inning Sunday.
HURT: Third baseman Joe Crede sat out Sunday’s game after being hit in the hand Saturday night. Also sitting out Sunday with a sore hand was Roberto Alomar. Catcher Sandy Alomar Jr. injured his groin in a collision at the plate with Boston’s Kevin Youkilis in the third inning Sunday. Alomar had to leave the game and was replaced by Ben Davis.
