Holly McPeak and Elaine Youngs are using great conditioning to advance deep into the Olympic beach volleyball tournament. “We’re not wimpy chicks,” Youngs said. “We work hard, we train hard, so we don’t have to worry at 15-15 whether we’re going to be too exhausted to finish. It’s nice to have that to lean back on.” And McPeak, 35, says, “I don’t feel one bit different than I did when I was 22.” Meanwhile, fellow Americans Misty May and Kerri Walsh are rolling along too as both U.S. teams won their medal-round openers Saturday. One more victory for each and they would meet in Monday’s semifinals.

Members only

Two Russian men apparently looking for free room and board were arrested while trying to sneak into the Olympic Village posing as team members, police said Saturday. Police said the two faced misdemeanor charges for attempting to enter the village using someone else’s credentials. They were not identified.

Kick it up

The U.S. women’s soccer team is in the semifinals Monday against Germany, but the team knows it has been less than stellar. “Dissatisfied? Absolutely,” Abby Wambach said. “We have nowhere to go but up, and we realize that. Fear, nervousness, other team’s pressure–so many things are involved with key players not performing their best in big situations and big-time games.”
