This is regarding “Breast-feeding fight yields legal victory; Rebuked for her attempt to nurse her child at a health club, a La Grange woman launches a drive that leads to a new state law” (Page 1, Aug. 15).
Please accept the thanks of the many mothers who wish to feed their babies within the context of their larger lives. At my monthly breastfeeding support group, we often discuss ways to distract or disarm those who are dismayed by a breastfeeding mother. I suggest that a mother say, very calmly, to a clerk or docent: “Does your company have a written policy on breastfeeding? I’m sure your manager will know where to look for it.” In fact, most stores, museums and health clubs welcome nursing mothers, but the front-line people have not been trained in these policies. It’s a management oversight and very often management will go overboard to make things right.
