In “Government value” (Voice of the people, Aug. 18), letter writer Lance Wilcox answers the following question, which had been posed by letter writer Glenn Spence on Aug. 12: “What group of people would you rather have spending money, rich people or the federal government?”

Wilcox has a long list government services, ranging from retirement benefits to DNA research. Some of the services are local or state, but the big flaw is his repeated mantra: The government spent money, the rich did not.

Now I’ll ask Wilcox, “Where did the government get the money to spend on all this wonderful stuff?”

I say that the government gets its money from the rich. Statistics say that the top 5 percent pay well over half the total income tax burden in the U.S. So it seems that when the federal government is spending, it’s spending rich people’s money.
