No. 18 Conant shook off a sluggish first half and the loss of quarterback Jonathon Kosrow to injury in the third quarter to defeat the host Warriors 31-13 Friday night in a non-conference game.
Conant trailed 13-6 at halftime as Waubonsie Valley scored 10 points in the waning minutes of the first half.
But Conant outscored Waubonsie Valley 25-0 in the second half. On the first possession of the second half, the Cougars took only five plays to march 65 yards and even the score. Senior quarterback Kosrow made the big play when he ran 53 yards to the Waubonsie 1-yard line to set up Tyler Rice’s game-tying, 1-yard plunge with 9 minutes 15 seconds left in the third quarter.
Rice, a 5-foot-8-inch, 170-pound senior running back, rushed for 196 yards on 23 carries and three touchdowns. He iced the game with a 77-yard touchdown run with 4:23 left in the fourth quarter to put Conant ahead 25-13.
“We had a little meeting at halftime and then we came out and played Conant football,” Rice said.
Kosrow, who rushed for 168 yards, left the game with a left knee injury with 2:06 left in the third and the score tied 13-13.
