Lockport had little trouble keeping its No. 1 ranking in its season opener against visiting Moline on Friday night. The Porters capitalized on three first-half Maroons turnovers enroute to a 33-14 victory.
Jake Christensen played a key role in all five of the Porters’ touchdowns. The Iowa-bound quarterback was 15 of 22 for 295 yards, passing for four touchdowns and running for a fifth to help Lockport to a 33-0 lead after three quarters.
Zach Lammers was Christensen’s main target.
The senior wide receiver hauled in seven passes for 192 yards, including scores of 25 and 33 yards.
“We were able to pick them apart and eventually beat them deep,” Lammers said. “We wanted to exploit them deep and I think we did that well.”
After being stifled on their opening possession, the Porters defense helped out the offense, forcing three consecutive fumbles by Moline running back Tyler Olson.
Christensen and Co. would score off those three miscues, with Lammers hauling in two touchdown throws and then wideout Rich Bonko catching one of 14 yards.
“They were taking away George [Kadlec] on the curls so Zach got open on the other side,” Christensen said. “You take away George, you get it to Zach. You take away Zach and George, you get it to Bonko.”
