One would hope that Mayor Richard Daley and his buildings commissioner exert as much effort keeping public spaces like nightclubs, back-yard porches and Loop office buildings safe as they do making sure the Chicago Cubs jump through every possible hoop related to keeping Wrigley Field structurally sound.
Either the mayor is trying to improve Chicago’s dubious public safety record by making an example of the Cubs–and, by association, the Chicago Tribune–or he’s settling a score with an organization that dared to question his back-room political style.
No matter the reason, it’s a slap in the face to families and friends who lost loved ones in the E2 disaster, the 2003 porch collapse and the Cook County Building fire.
You made your point, Mayor. Now go take care of the real problems in this city while you still have a city to lead.
