Walking into the new CB2 at 800 W. North Ave. gives you the feeling that you have just bitten into an orange citrus-centered treat.

There’s a feeling of freshness and surprise.

Splashes of color, cool, lean shapes and sleek contemporary styles provide the eye candy at Crate and Barrel’s newest Chicago store.

There is the Flip-Flop convertible sofa in a tingly tangerine ($999), the Va-va Voom Zoom Sofa ($699) in cocoa, the Tripod Floor Lamp ($189) and even thoughts of artist Alexander Calder with the hanging mobile frames ($24.95).

On opening day (Aug. 20), Gordon Segal, Crate and Barrel’s founder and chief executive officer made last-minute touches. And Barbara Turf, Crate and Barrel’s president, chatted with the CB2 team.

Segal’s and Turf’s presence increased the excitement at the new CB2, but the real source of energy is in what the store has to offer in contemporary design with price appeal.

The first CB2 store opened in January 2000 at 3757 N. Lincoln Ave. It was a prototype.

Segal calls the new store “a modified experiment.”

For example, CB2 mixes bath products with the rest of the home furnishings so people can see them with other elements that go into a house.

This freshness and willingness to experiment are what give CB2 its youthful attitude.
