Now that more than 1,000 servicemen and women have been killed in Iraq, honor their service and sacrifice. And honor the sacrifice of their families. These brave men and women stood up and gave their last breath for the cause they served. No matter where you stand on Iraq, these men and women, now our honored dead, and the more than 7,000 who have been wounded, are the true heroes of America.
But one cannot help remembering that these lives might have been saved, these deaths may not have been necessary, if not for our commander in chief. He swaggered into Baghdad, declared the mission and then he let the country descend into chaos and insurgency. Even when given plans for post-war Iraq by the State Department and other military experts, President Bush preferred to ignore their counsel and listen only to a select circle of naive neocons.
Where is he now that the hospitals and cemeteries are crowded? Where is he now that the intelligence shows there were no weapons of mass destruction and there was no link to Al Qaeda?
Arizona Sen. John McCain has said we will be in Iraq for a long period of time. How many more milestones like this lie ahead?
