A 3-acre park is expected to open in June behind Lawndale Community Academy after the Chicago Park District Board of Commissioners approved an agreement with the city Wednesday to create Lawndale Campus Park.

The park, which will include three athletic fields, a water-spray area and running track, will straddle St. Louis Avenue north of the school at 3500 W. Douglas Blvd., said Arnold Randall, the district’s director of planning and development.

Under the agreement, the district will pay the nearly $2.4 million tab to build the park on land owned by the city. Once the park is complete, the city will give the land and $948,510 in funds from a state Open Space Land Acquisition Development grant to the district. Part of the overall cost includes an environmental cleanup of the property.
