Having recently passed the nightmarish anniversary of Sept. 11, I cannot help but think of the grief and anxiety I felt three years ago and of how I looked to President Bush for leadership, guidance and reassurance in those terrible days.

After all, the very point of terrorism is to sow lasting fear in a population, and the president served as a beacon of hope and strength, telling us that if only we stuck together, the enemy could never win.

Three years later, this administration has divided the country like never before and is reduced to running for re-election by peddling scare tactics and epithets.

What exactly does that say about their success in the war on terror?
