It may be just a coincidence, but reliever Kyle Farnsworth’s luck seems to have changed since the Cubs found a plastic deer, fitted it with a children’s-sized Farnsworth jersey and brought it along on the trip.
Farnsworth has been sharp in two consecutive outings since returning from the disabled list, giving manager Dusty Baker one more right-handed option.
“When [Farnsworth] was having his problems and struggling a little bit, he was still a presence,” reliever Kent Mercker said. “Even if he’s scuffling a little bit, here comes a guy who’s going to come in and throw 100 m.p.h. and he’s going to come right at you. We missed that. We needed that.”
