The gift is growing.

Sally Eklund, 97, donated her property at 377 Park Ave. to the Glencoe Historical Society four years ago. Eklund’s wish, said Vivian Zahniser, a member of the society, is that her former home will endure as an “oasis in downtown Glencoe for all to enjoy for generations to come.”

The society recently completed the first phase of its garden renovation, thanks to $25,000 in contributions and the donation of a garden plan and labor by Mariani Landscape of Lake Bluff.

“There is something magical about it,” said Zahniser, garden chairwoman. “You enter off of Park Avenue, and it’s like another world.”

Zahniser said that although Eklund was not a gardener, she very much wanted the garden restored. “We are trying to do a garden that could have existed on that property 100 years ago,” Zahniser said.
