Voters may be asked to decide on a referendum for a $6.95 million expansion and renovation of the Hinsdale Public Library as early as April.

The library was last expanded in 1989 after voters approved a bond issue in 1987.

Library Board president Daryl McClendon said in a meeting Sunday that the library decided to consider a complete renovation after it discovered that fixing the roof, air-conditioning, and other building systems would cost approximately $1 million. He said expanding the building by 10,000 square feet would allow the library to meet programming and service needs for the next 15 to 20 years. The expansion and operating costs would increase annual property tax bills by $13 to $14 per $100,000 of a property’s market value, he said.
