As ever, college freshmen will take up booze this fall in vast numbers. A 2002 study found that 50% arrive on campus as “abstainers” but by Christmas break, only 20% still are. College drinking is linked to an annual 1,400 deaths and 70,000 sex assaults. But two schools–DePauw in Indiana and the University of Kentucky (a state where teetotaling is heresy)–are test sites for a new effort by a U.S. coalition of fraternities and sororities to curb alcohol use on campus. DePauw trustee Norval Stephens says: “This will be a long haul, but as the Chinese proverb says, `Every journey begins with one step.’ ” Better than 12 later on.
