Art Deco furniture gets new life in the hands of Petra Deuter and Christiane Levand, the owners of Deuter and Levand.
Their new River North home furniture store opened last month on the east side of the first floor of 153 W. Ohio St. The space had been occupied by Sawbridge Studios, which now is on the west side of the floor.
The 2,000-square-foot Deuter and Levand showroom features refurbished Art Deco furnishings, such as birch and black-laquered round-edge end tables ($2,000) and birch and Macassar-ebony consoles ($5,000).
“We’re refurbishing vintage furniture to look the way it did from 1920 to the 1940s,” says President Christiane Levand.
Deuter and Levand’s neighbor, Paul Zurowsky, owner of Sawbridge Studios, welcomes the Art Deco showroom. “We feel they will complement what we do,” he says.

KIDS’ STUFF: Speaking of Sawbridge Studios, the store expanded its line of children’s furnishings.
“When I grew up, I did my homework at the kitchen table. There was no desk in the bedroom,” says Zurowksy, the 49-year-old owner of Sawbridge. “Now parents take the bed, desk and all of their children’s interests into consideration when shopping for furniture. They really look at it more as an investment to grow with their children.”
One design that grows with children is a convertible bunk bed ($3,450) by Maine Cottage Furniture that can be turned into twin beds. Maine’s painted furniture is made of maple and comes in 45 colors — offering a selection like “the Sherwin Williams of painted maple,” Zurowsky says.
Children’s furnishings that will be for sale through the end of this month include model reproductions of swing toys ($65 to 85), hand-painted antique game boards ($65 to $450) and early American folk art quilt pictures ($750 to 2,650). .
