I am responding to “At random” by James Warren (“Elizabeth Edwards hoping to be called cancer survivor,” Tempo, Nov. 15). It has struck a nerve with me, both because I am a nurse and the daughter of a breast cancer survivor. Until I read his column, I was unaware that it had been four years since Edwards’ last mammogram.

Four years?

I find it unbelievable, very sad and almost appalling that this educated, wealthy woman who surely has excellent medical coverage could not find the time to have this very easy, routine test done.

The guideline for mammography after age 50 is every year. I am sure she is kicking herself, as Warren states in his article, and only hope that this unfortunate situation is the incentive for other women who are overdue for their mammograms to get them done.
